I never used to think I have it, but the more this topic would pop up on my feed – I started to realize that I am one of the millions of middle children out there.
My sister is 2 years older than me and my brother is two years younger than me… making her the oldest, him the baby and myself the middle child. The fact that I am the second girl didn’t help either.
There are definitely both pros and cons to being in the middle. Sure, you don’t get as much praise from your parents as your other siblings but at least when you do really badly they’ll never know because they never ask. Also, if you decide to change your degree or if you fail a course they’ll never know either… because they never ask. (okay that may be a bit far but you catch my drift.)
I think the main issue is that my sister and I went to the same school, both did ballet, pottery and violin. We were both in the choir and were both expected to take physics and biology. I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy some of those things, but I think it would have been better if we had done different things so as to avoid so much comparison – especially because she was better at most of those things than me but maybe that was because I didn’t get as much praise.
The great part of my life is that when I went out to a party or would stay up all night on Skype I would barely ever get in trouble. One of my favourite memories would have to be when I got back from a night out in a tiny black dress and discovered I had been locked out. There I was running around the house – barefoot – trying to find my way in. In the meantime, there was my dad enjoying his breakfast while laughing at me trying to get inside. He finally let me in and I ate breakfast with him.
My parents are awesome!
I have almost all of the characteristics of a middle child – I have always been the peacemaker in our family, I enjoy more practical work, I can’t sit behind a desk and work all day and so on…
middle-child-syndrome is real.
