If there’s someone’s life you want: it’s Ferns. Her busy blog – with everything from ‘grown up ice cream’ and ‘Ultimate Hot Chocolate’ recipes, to getting to know her unique style and having the opportunity to travel the globe with her. There’s definitely something for everyone on her blog “Fern About Town.”
I managed to discover her while on Instagram one day – her pretty pastel theme begged me to contact her and get to know her thoughts on blogging.
I popped her an email, and despite her busy life, she was very quick to respond.
Who is “Fern About Town” and when/why did you start your blog?
“I began my blog at the end of 2015, initially as a place to keep a log of my recipes and travels. I’d been using my iPhone to take (very bad!) photos and that changed when I was given a camera for Christmas. I’d always enjoyed writing, and the blog was a creative outlet for that, but photography was completely new and I instantly loved it. Soon enough, the blog expanded to include more of the things I enjoy, such as beauty and style (and I never thought I’d be in front of the camera!).”
What would your number one tip be for aspiring bloggers out there?
“Your blog is your corner of the internet. Create what you love, and what you’d love to read yourself.”
What is your favorite social media platform?
“By far, I get most engagement though Instagram which has become a lot more savvy than most social media platforms in helping influencers build and interact with their audience. And, who doesn’t love finding an amazing new account to follow?”
If you could go anywhere in the world… where would you go?
“There are so many places on my list! Somewhere in the Indian Ocean would be ideal…”
What has been the greatest challenge of blogging?
“When I first started, I aimed to write one blog post a week. In hindsight, the writing, photography and editing was quite an ask on a weekly basis and took a lot of discipline and planning! This can still be a challenge, but I aim for monthly posts now which, I feel, are a bit more considered. I once went to a blogger event where Rosie Londoner was speaking and she emphasised the importance of quality over quantity. That really stuck with me.”
What has been your favorite part of being a blogger?
“I get to meet some amazing, creative people that do the same thing I do, but differently. There is definitely a community and I recently co-hosted the first London Bloggers Picnic to support that network. It was great to have very established bloggers there mingling with more up and coming ones. That’s what it’s all about.”
What make-up product are you currently loving?
“I’m very partial to a good highlighter but so many are too glittery for me. I recently discovered Rodial’s Instaglam Powder and it’s perfect, giving just a subtle glow to cheek- and brow-bones. I also like to spritz Jurlique’s Rosewater Balancing mist throughout the day. It smells like a English country garden in summer, and I love it.”
What fashion trend are you currently obsessed with?
“I would definitely put my style more in the ‘classic’ camp rather than ‘trendy’ as I tend to go for pieces that last, season after season. That said, I do like the Prince of Wales check that is on everything this autumn/winter. It’s a classic, really.”
What fashion bloggers inspire you?
“They’re all very different, but I love Julia Hengel (Gal Meets Glam), Paola Alberdi (Blank Itinerary) and Peony Lim.”
